VolunteersVolunteer Mission: Proudly assisting the Leisure Services Department in serving our island community by enhancing the quality of life and creating memorable experiences. Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer and Internship Program Volunteer Application Available Here! Introduction Volunteers - Volunteers can be students from educational institutions or individuals wanting to invest in their community. Volunteers donate their services to the City and are not intended to replace City employees. The US Department of Labor has ruled that an employer-employee relationship does not exist when volunteers do not expect compensation for their services and are working toward humanitarian objectives. Interns - Interns are persons who are receiving practical training experience to complete an educational requirement and who may perform work as part of the training they receive. Policy and Procedures: All volunteers and interns are subject to City policies and procedures, as well as applicable federal, state and local laws that may apply to their activities. It is the responsibility of the Department Director to ensure that their volunteers and interns are aware of basic policies and procedures that are applicable to regular employees and that they attend any required trainings. Department Directors or designees must maintain an accounting of hours worked by volunteers and interns. In the event of accident or emergency, the same workers compensation procedures used for employees should be used for volunteers and interns. The City reserves the right to dismiss any volunteer or intern from the City’s volunteer and/or internship program without prior notice. Special Provisions for Minor Volunteers |
