Flood Information

What You Can Do

Several of the City’s flood mitigation and management efforts depend on your cooperation and assistance. Here are some ways you can help:

  • Do not dump or throw debris or construction materials into ditches, drainage basins, city drainage systems/facilities, waterway or bodies of water. This is a violation of both local and State laws. Even grass clippings and branches can accumulate and plug downstream channels or pipes. Obstructed pipes cannot carry water, and when it rains the water has to go somewhere. Every piece of trash and debris contributes to potential flooding problems.
  • If your property is waterfront or next to a drainage facility (storm sewer inlet), please do your part and keep them clear of debris. The City has a drainage system maintenance program, which ensures proper operation of the system.
  • If you see dumping of debris in the ditches, drainage facilities, basins or waterways, contact the Public Works Department at (727) 363-9243 or Code Enforcement at (727) 363-9241 to report the incident.
  • Always check with the Community Development Department before you build on, alter, re-grade or place fill material on your property. Changing the grade of your property may be prohibited. Permits to do work within the City are required to ensure that projects comply with applicable laws and do not cause problems on other properties.
  • If you see construction activity or any type of land filling without a City permit placard posted on the property, please contact the Community Development Department at (727) 363-9241 as soon as possible. Your assistance as a concerned citizen is very important.
