| Communications room (or Comm. Center) is the single most important
link between the community and the Patrol Division. The Telecommunications
Officers speak directly with citizens, determining their needs and prioritizing
calls for service.
The Telecommunications Officer is responsible for obtaining critical
information from callers. This information includes location, type
of incident, a description of the persons or suspects involved, the direction
of travel if they left the area as well as a vehicle description if applicable.
Once the needed information is obtained from the caller, the Communications
Officer radios the information to the units on the street, dispatching
them to the scene.
The Officers on the street rely on the Comm. Center to provide them
with up to the minute information on in progress calls as well as tracking
other units activities. In addition, the Comm. Center
is equipped with the latest computer systems, allowing for instant access
to County, State and Federal criminal justice information data files. This
allows the officers on the street to quickly identify wanted persons, locate
missing juveniles and endangered adults. This same network of computers
provides information on stolen property, stolen motor vehicles and drivers
license status.
The Communications Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
They answer all incoming emergency calls, including those received
via the 911 system. Personnel within the Comm. Center also take walk
in complaints at any time.
