The St. Pete Beach Public Library, located at 365 73rd Avenue (about two blocks from City Hall), was founded in 1951 as the Long Key Library by the St. Petersburg Beach Community Club. It became a municipal library when the City of St. Pete Beach was incorporated in 1957.
Today, the Library is a division of the City's Department of Finance. It has been a member of the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative since 1989. The 8,200 square foot building was constructed in 1969, and partially renovated in 1995. Daily activities for the staff of two Librarians, two Library Assistants and five Library Pages include processing library cards; charging, discharging and shelving materials; collecting fines and fees; signing up patrons for computers and programs; and arranging for local reserves; answering general reference and readers advisory questions. Most books and a growing number of other materials are now cataloged and prepared for circulation via a vendor contract with the Baker & Taylor Company.
